What is Boot Sector Virus ?

  • A boot sector virus is one that infects the first sector, i.e. the boot sector, of a floppy disk or hard drive. Boot sector viruses modifies the MBR and infects the information system during the start-up process. It tends to create bad sector of the disk.
  • Examples:  
    • C-Brain, Stone, Disk Killer, Danish boot, Devel 941, Michelangelo etc.

  • How can a boot sector virus harm the computer?
    • Boot sector viruses infect the boot sector of the disk where, MBR is stored. It modifies MBR that prevents the system from being able to boot from the disk. When infected disk or CD is used during booting, such types of viruses transmit automatically in the system and harms the entire system.
