What is LAN?

LAN - Local Area Network
  • LAN is a network of computers located relatively near to each other. It is network of computers connected withing a limited distance of one another within a single building, or one department of campus and may covers upto few kilometers. 
  • In another words, a local  area network (LAN) is a network of computers that are relatively near with each and are connected in a way that enables them to communicate by cable and less devices. A LAN can consist of just two or three computers to exchange data or share resources or it can include hundreds of computers of different kinds. Any network that exists withing a single room, or withing a building, or withing a short distance is considered as LAN.
  • The major benefit of LAN is that it can help to reduce cost by allowing people and computers to share expensive resources. LAN also provide users with access to shared programs and data files, improving workflow, productivity and communication within an organization.
Features of LAN:
  1. The diameter is not more than a few kilometers.
  2. It covers a single organization.
