What is Protocol?

Protocol is a set of rules or procedures for transmitting data between electronic devices, such as computers. It is used to make logical connections between different electronic devices for transferring data from one location to another.
  • Protocol manages and controls how communication between electronic devices on the network takes place. It directs the movement of packets through the physical network and minimize the possibility of collisions between packets sent at the same time.
  • Some popular protocols are:
    • TCP/IP
    • HTTP
    • FTP
    • SMTP
    • POP
    • NNTP
    • UDP
    • DHCP
    • IMAP
