What is Database?

Database is a collection of interrelated data/information used to represent information to an information system.
  • It is an organized collection of interrelated data which can be used for various purposes.  It is used to store, organize and extract data.
  • Database can be computerize and non-computerize (manual). Databases are structured to facilitate storage, retrieval, modifications, and deletion of data in conjunction with various data-processing operations.
  • A database consists of a file or set of files that can be broken down into record, each of which consists of one or more fields. 
Dictionary is an example of database where words are arranged alphabetically. 
Telephone directory, attendance register of class, mark ledger etc. are some examples of database.
